2025 Pollinators: Sherwood Park Planet Protectors

This year, five schools nominated by their communities received a $1,300 grant along with their F2SBC Pollinator Award to host a local field trip or school food feast. Here’s how Sherwood Park used their award to celebrate pollinators and local food.

The Sherwood Park Planet Protectors, led by educator Shalini Rughani from École Sherwood Park Elementary, used the funding to create a vibrant food garden that highlighted the essential role pollinators play in our food system. Students planted and cared for a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, many of which were later harvested to make fresh, nutritious salads. When certain ingredients weren’t available, local alternatives were used to ensure nothing went to waste.

The celebration culminated in an “Eat the Rainbow” event, where classes and the Planet Protectors group came together to explore the colours, flavours, and benefits of fresh, seasonal food — all while learning how pollinators support the plants that nourish us.

Thanks to Farm to School BC, Sherwood Park students were able to engage hands-on with gardening, nutrition, and environmental stewardship, experiencing firsthand the connection between pollinators and the food on their plates.
