The Kamloops region, which was recently expanded to include School District 83 of the North Okanagan Shuswap, has been a hotbed of local food and food security activity for many years. Since 2014, Farm to School BC has funded 21 schools to enhance hands-on, experiential learning around food. These include school gardens, microgreen towers, courtyard chickens and school greenhouses.
About the Community Animator
After growing up overseas and spending the majority of her young adult life jumping around BC, Sonya is proud to call Secwepemc’ulew her home. She lives in Kamloops where she spends time daily in the garden visiting the hens, bunnies, and bees. She is grateful to teach in SD83 and has previously been an active team member of the South Canoe Outdoor Elementary School. Sonya is passionate about connecting people within community and believes that a strong community makes for a more resilient home. In her spare time, Sonya can be found in the pottery studio, baking something delicious, or reading a book in her hammock.
